Getting Started with GIS

Presented by the Caribbean URISA Chapter
This workshop will introduce participants to the basic components of a GIS and fundamental concepts for GIS use and application. Participants will learn how a GIS helps people visualize and create information that can be used to make decisions and solve problems.  The workshop will use QGIS as the GIS software.

At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Construct a definition of GIS
  2. Determine some of the benefits of a GIS
  3. Identify the components of a GIS and determine the most critical components for the success of GIS in an organization.
  4. Describe two common data models used to represent real-world objects and phenomena in a GIS.
  5. Identify sources and types of data for GIS
  6. Explore a GIS map and access information about map features.
  7. Perform Basic Queries to find and select features that meet specific criteria.
  8. Prepare a GIS map to share information and present analysis results.
